Clovis Raeburn
The PeripheralClovis Raeburn is an associate of Macon who enters the story amid the group’s efforts to understand unfamiliar technology and protect Burton. She becomes more than a name in their technical network when she joins Flynne’s circle in person and, during an armed attack, takes decisive action to treat Burton and summon further medical assistance.
Introduction and Associations
Macon introduces Clovis to Flynne while Clovis is beside Conner’s hospital bed. Clovis is described as slightly older and taller than Flynne, lanky, with short dark hair and a small fin-like crest. She recognizes a Wheelie Boy device and mentions having owned one in high school, establishing her familiarity with the technology and its appeal as a collectible. Her introduction places her among the people gathered around the injured Conner and connects her directly to Macon’s network.
Clovis’s work also touches the story’s technology exchange. When an unknown piece of hardware is discussed, the proposed arrangement is that files will be sent and Clovis will be paid to arrange it, though the person speaking says they cannot explain what the hardware does. The exchange suggests a role in organizing technical logistics, but does not establish that Clovis herself is the person being addressed or specify what the device is.
Connection to Flynne and the Remote Technology
Clovis is associated with the telepresence system through Flynne’s first disorienting experience of an anthropomorphic drone. Ash explains that Flynne is receiving input from a telepresence avatar and says Macon’s device is imperfect but functional. Clovis’s direct part in building or operating that system is not specified; the evidence instead situates her within the wider group coordinating its use.
When Flynne questions whether a device is merely a game controller, the reply identifies it as a hands-free telepresent interface. This exchange frames the technology as something that can be mistaken for entertainment equipment even as it enables remote embodiment. Clovis’s later recognition of the Wheelie Boy collectible reinforces her familiarity with objects that cross the boundary between consumer devices and the group’s more consequential technical world.
Action During the Attack
Clovis’s clearest individual action comes during the shooting at the Coldiron team. As the attack unfolds, she pushes Flynne out of danger and fires a pistol. The scene presents her concentration under pressure without suggesting that the violence is effortless: she acts quickly to protect someone beside her while the attack is still underway.
After Burton is wounded, Clovis shifts immediately to medical care. With Tommy holding Flynne back, she puts on blue gloves, uses a ceramic hook to open Burton’s clothing over the wound, and applies pressure to stop the bleeding. She then demands a Walter Reed surgical drone. Her intervention turns a moment of immediate danger into an urgent attempt to keep Burton alive and secure advanced treatment.
Continuing Role
Later, Flynne sees Burton and Conner recovering in hospital beds, each wearing a white crown, as Clovis asks Tacoma whether she wants to switch jobs because neither patient is home much. The exchange places Clovis among those managing the practical aftermath of the attack and tending to the injured. Together with her intervention at the scene, it presents her as a resourceful participant whose significance lies in effective action: she recognizes familiar technology, protects Flynne, and responds to Burton’s injury with focused care.
